Hervé: Little Monsters

The penis is perceived as a symbol of power: Depictions of its erected state are flooding the internet, in paintings it appears as metaphors such as towers, scepters or staffs in order to legitimizes male rulers on a symbolic level.

The small difference between men and women is overcoded with meanings and expectations that mostly are used to establish a quasi-natural superiority of the so called strong gender. The series Little Monsters goes back to the object of this reasoning and tries to deconstruct its symbolic power. By fading out the body the penises appear to have a life on their own and lose the threat attriubuted to them. Associated qualities such as strength, domination and power dissolve in this visual study and set the view free to examine a strange and vulnerable organ, that doesn't have anything in common with the expectations projected on it.
