Lina Scheynius: Intimacies
With her unmistakable view of intimacy, the body and closeness, Swedish photographer Lina Scheynius has shaped a visual language that has had an impact far beyond the art scene and earned her a large following.
Despite this international fame, she is regularly censored or secretly blocked by Instagram - a process that not only curtails her reach, but also reveals the power relations of digital platforms. As part of the photo exhibition and this publication, we look at the power of a company vs. Lina's self-empowerment as an artist: her work shows how artistic freedom asserts itself even when it rubs against the boundaries of structures.
"[…] I have been struggling for years with the platform and the way I have felt being on there. I have been torn. Part of me was loving the idea that I can reach so many people, part of me was feeling anxious and caught in a scrolling loop. My work was never accepted by the app. It was categorised as something offensive or pornographic. I had to censor it to make it belong. It’s an app for people over 13, it could, if it wished to, build in filters like Flickr had and Substack has, but it has chosen to classify almost everything with a hint of nudity as offensive, and it has decided that ours should be a world without nipples – even when it comes to art. […]"
